Cement Guide

Which Cement for Which Job?

Choosing the right cement depends on where it is used and on site conditions. This guide gives a general overview; the final decision rests with the project design or supervising engineer.

01

Foundations and parts in contact with soil

If the soil or groundwater contains sulfates, concrete made with ordinary cement is damaged. In this case Type 2 cement is recommended, and Type 5 cement for soils with high sulfate content. A soil test shows which is needed.

02

Structural concrete

For columns, beams and slabs under normal conditions, Type 1 or Type 2 cement is used. In mass concrete, a cement that releases less heat, such as Type 2, reduces the risk of thermal cracking.

03

Mortar, masonry and plaster

Portland limestone cement or Type 1 is suitable for this work. Portland limestone cement gives a smooth, workable mortar.

04

Humid and coastal areas

In humid environments, near the sea or in contact with salt water, the quality of concrete work matters as much as a sulfate-resistant cement: a low water to cement ratio, proper compaction and correct curing.
